Early Spring Songs

As the earth awakens from its winter slumber, the gentle touch of Lady Spring brings forth blossoms, birdsong, and the tender green of new life. In Waldorf early childhood, songs hold a dreamy, reverent quality, creating a sense of warmth and wonder while gently guiding young children through the seasons. Singing simple, lyrical songs helps children form an inner picture of nature’s transformations, awakening their imaginations to the beauty of springtime.

These are songs a sing in circle time with our parent-child groups in early spring, and in my own home, these are frequently requested by my two year old- as we work on home keeping tasks or as a lullaby.

My Lady Spring is Dressed in Green
My Lady Spring is dressed in green,
She wears a primrose crown,
And little baby buds and twigs
Are clinging to her gown.
The sun shines if she laughs at all,
And when she weeps the raindrops fall,
My Lady Spring, My lady Spring
My Lady Spring!

This song invites children to imagine the radiant figure of Lady Spring as she brings new life to the world. The imagery of primrose crowns and baby buds evokes a rich, fairy-tale-like picture of the season’s arrival. And, especially for the toddlers whose own emotional realm is just awakening, connecting laughter and tears to rhythms of nature helps to bring imagery and order to feelings that can be overwhelming. They are all part of the rhythms of life- after the raindrops fall, the sun will shine again!

I Have Heard a Mother Bird
I have heard a mother bird
Singing in the rain.
Telling all her little ones,
"Spring has come again!"

I have seen a wave of green
Down a country lane.
Making all the hedges glad,
Spring has come again!

I have found a patch of gold
Shining in the sun.
Crocus buds are coming up,
Spring has just begun!

This sweet and tender song is a favorite for rainy spring days or moments of quiet wonder. The simple melody and gentle repetition make it perfect for young children to learn and sing along, filling their hearts with joy as they observe the signs of spring around them. Bringing relevant gestures helps to make the images of the song come alive for these little ones!

Bringing seasonal songs into your family’s rhythm fosters a deep connection to nature’s cycles, offering children a sense of security and wonder. May these melodies bring warmth and light to your days as Lady Spring steps gently across the land.
